Kai Jones: A 14-year-old freestyler amazes everyone

Jones first became known at the age of 11 when he dared to jump off a 10-meter-high cliff, managed to do so, and then put it on the net. The video was viewed over three million times on YouTube - a star was born. A few months later he won his first freestyle competition and sponsorships with Red Bull and Atomic followed.

Jones knows who to thank for his rise. On the one hand, social media gives him the opportunity to upload a video within a very short time, which then gives him enormous reach. On the other hand, his father Todd Jones was also significantly involved. Once a professional skier himself, he founded the company Teton Gravity Research, which specialized in ski equipment for freestylers. But: In order to become a professional freestyler, you also need a lot of will to train, courage and ambition.

Mother between worries and pride When asked if his favorite activity was a bit dangerous, Jones admitted with a laugh: “I crash a lot. When I talk about it at home, I always have to do it in such a way that my mother worries as little as possible.” But she also supports her son 100 percent. After all, she knows how much training and preparation he puts into his jumps, she told the New York Times .

Jones' next step should be towards becoming a professional freestyler. The 14-year-old has not yet fully arrived where South Tyroleans Arianna Tricomi and Ralph Welponer already regularly work. He is currently attending the high school Picabo Street Academy, which offers winter athletes an ideal package between school and sport and from which several US professionals have already emerged. The ski kid has the potential to become a future champion - and there doesn't seem to be a lack of will either.
