Next prominent resignation: Silvia Bertagna quits

To Biathlete Dominik Windisch and Skier Manfred Mölgg Silvia Bertagna, the next exceptional local talent, says goodbye to professional sports. She will compete in the World Cup for the last time this Thursday in Silvaplana (Switzerland). The 35-year-old from Val Gardena has shaped the freestyle sport in South Tyrol like no one else. In a decade of international competitions, she has made three appearances at the Olympics, four at the World Championships and a total of 3 World Cup starts. She made it to the podium 4 times. In December 44, she celebrated her only World Cup victory in her flagship discipline, Big Air, at the City Event in Mönchengladbach. During her career, however, Bertagna was repeatedly slowed down by injuries, most recently with knee problems. “Actually, I still really want to go skiing…” Silvia Bertagna “It was 10 incredible years full of adventures, successes, travel and emotions, but there were also difficult moments, injuries and frustration,” reflects the ski acrobat from Ortisei. But there is a touch of melancholy in her words: “I actually still really want to ski and I feel like I can still give a lot to this sport. However, my body doesn't allow me to give 100 percent of what I actually want. That’s why it’s time to leave the stage to the younger generations.” Bertagna has now come full circle where her World Cup career began in February 2013, namely in Silvaplana, Switzerland. She will compete in the slopestyle qualification there on Thursday afternoon. If she overcomes this hurdle, she will have her very last appearance on the international stage in the final on Saturday. She definitely deserved the big exit at the weekend.
