Now it's really getting started: the winter sports season is starting

Almost a month after the giant slaloms in Sölden, the skiers are now stopping off in the far north. In Lapland, more precisely in Finland's largest ski resort in Levi, it is now the turn of the fine technicians. On Saturday the women will compete in their first of a total of twelve seasonal slaloms, and the next day it will be the men's turn. A total of five South Tyroleans made the trip to Finland: Fabian Bacher, Simon Maurberger, Manfred Mölgg, Riccardo Tonetti and Alex Vinatzer.

The ski jumpers will be on the jump for the first time on Friday. Tickets for the first World Cup decision will be awarded next Sunday in Wisla, Poland. There is also a team jumping event on Saturday. Alex Insam, a South Tyrolean, is also competing in Poland, but due to a lack of Italian teammates he is only taking part in the individual competition.

For the Val Gardena freestylers Silvia Bertagna and Ralph Welponer, the season began three weeks ago with the BigAir event in Modena and should have continued at the weekend on the Stubai Glacier with the first slopestyle competition. While the Nations Cup serves as a warmup on the first day of the race in Igls, the tension increases significantly on Saturday morning when the first winners of the season in the women's and doubles races are determined. The men's competition and the team relay will take place 24 hours later. The World Cup opener at the foot of the Patscherkofel feels like a home race for the South Tyrolean tobogganists, as they don't have an ice track in this country. In addition to Andrea Vötter and Dominik Filehner, who are the hottest irons in the fire, almost a dozen South Tyroleans are contesting the start of the season north of the Brenner Pass.
