The state governor honors South Tyrol's best winter sports athletes

"In many disciplines," Durnwalder emphasized at the ceremony in the Laimburg rock cellar, "South Tyrol's athletes are among the world's best, and they therefore also fulfill the function of ambassadors for our country."

Durnwalder is particularly happy about the honoring of very young athletes: the ski jumper Elena Runggaldier, the biathlete Lukas Hofer and the biathlete Dorothea Wierer, because "they and others guarantee that we will be able to celebrate successes in the future."

If sport is practiced and understood correctly, success can only be achieved with fairness and respect: “Sporting success not only involves material values, but also requires a considerable degree of idealism and altruism,” concluded the state governor, who also is the state council responsible for sport.

He presented the awards together with CONI South Tyrol President Heinz Gutweniger. Other guests of honor included FISI President South Tyrol Hermann Ambach, FISG President South Tyrol Christian Trettl and representatives of the military authorities.

25 athletes who successfully took part in the world and European championships in alpine and snowboard skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, artificial and natural track tobogganing, biathlon, figure skating, curling and ice climbing last winter season were invited to the reception. South Tyrolean athletes won a total of 27 medals in the last winter season; This does not include the Junior World Championships, where an additional ten podium places were achieved.
