Cross-country skiing World Cup race in Toblach at the weekend

The more than 150 employees in the Toblach OK had to work overtime to guarantee that these World Cup races could take place. “I am proud of my employees. It has snowed over half a meter in the last 24 hours, but everyone really tried hard, many of them tonight too, so that we can go through with the World Cup races on Saturday and Sunday,” says OK boss Herbert Santer happily.

Distance race on Saturday, sprint on Sunday

After the Tour de Ski at the beginning of January, World Cup points will be on the line again in Toblach on February 1st and 2nd. On Saturday from 10.30 a.m. the women will be competing in the distance race with an individual start over ten kilometers using the classic technique. At 14.15:15 p.m. the starting signal is given for the men's 9.30-kilometer race, always using the classic running technique. On Sunday, however, the sprint is on the program. The qualification begins at XNUMX a.m. and will be run in the free technique. Following the qualification, the finals will be held in a knockout system.

Since the races in Toblach are also the last important form test before the Olympic Games in Sochi, the entire world elite will be at the start. A total of 27 nations registered, including the leaders in the overall World Cup Therese Johaug and Martin Johnsrud Sundby from Norway. Also registered are her compatriots Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobssen, Marit Bjorgen, Petter Northug and Chris Jespersen (he will only decide this evening whether he will start), the Polish Justyna Kowalczyk, the Swiss Dario Cologna and the Russian Alexander Legkov.

Host Italy is taking part with 34 athletes, including Sprint World Cup leader Federico Pellegrino. There will also be four South Tyroleans at the start, Roland Clara and Dietmar Nöckler from Pusteria and David Hofer and Janmatie Kostner from Val Gardena. However, Debora Agreiter from Val Badia is missing because she is in action at the Junior World Championships in Trentino.

Broad supporting program

The spectators in Toblach are not only offered a major sporting event, but also a wide supporting program. “Party, party, party” is the motto at the big Ö3 disco on Saturday, February 1st from 22 p.m. in the large, heated marquee in the immediate vicinity of the “Nordic Arena” cross-country skiing stadium. The “little” guests, on the other hand, can look forward to the play bus with a rich children's program on both competition days.

A lot of celebrities from the fields of sport, politics, business and society are expected in Toblach as part of the two-day World Cup event. For example, the reigning Miss South Tyrol, Renate Oberleiter, has already confirmed her attendance.
