Astrid Jacobsen's heartbreaking family story

The Olympic Games are actually the big highlight in an athlete's career, the event at which you want to shine with a medal around your neck. This also applies to Astrid Jacobsen, who, instead of a great sporting moment, fell victim to a sad family tragedy in Sochi in 2014. On the day of the grand opening, her brother and training partner Sten Anders Jacobsen took his own life at the age of 25. The Norwegian didn't leave, but took part in the races - and came fourth in the sprint, narrowly missing out on a medal.

“It felt right. Looking back, I can say that there were probably several reasons that influenced my decision,” the Norwegian revealed on a talk show on the Norwegian broadcaster NRK : “The Olympic Village was protected from the outside world and the media. It was safer to be there because I couldn’t do anything at home.” Hard training against psychological pain The mental strain then took its toll on the three-time world champion. To ease her pain, she resorted to drastic measures: one of them was excessively harsh units. “The pain I got from physical training was familiar and easier to bear than grief and mental pain,” emphasized Jacobsen. She trained hard - with almost no plan and "probably abused it somehow."

Despite the shock, the Norwegian worked her way back to the top of the world and ended her active career to focus on herself to devote herself to her medical studies.
