Exceptional talent Klæbo also wins in the Nordic Arena

Johannes Høsflot Klæbo used the final World Cup race in Hochpustertal to put on a big show. The Scandinavian, who had finished tenth the day before, quickly caught up with the leaders and held his own at the front of the field. In the last few kilometers it became clear what the Norwegian whiz kid had in mind: an unleashed final sprint that would outshine even his toughest opponents. In the end, Klæbo threw up his hands prematurely and glided across the finish line with a lead of 1,9 seconds. Last year's Toblach winner Sergey Ustiugov secured second place in the exciting pursuit competition. The Russian left behind Alexey Poltoranini, who had fought his way from 14th place to the top group. Simen Hegstad Krüger, who was ahead in the individual competition, had to let his rivals go in the final sprint and settle for tenth place.

After the top athletes reached the finish line, all eyes in the Nordic Arena were on the local hero from Pusteria Dietmar Noeckler who, however, had to bear a large burden with 47th place from the previous day. In the classical style he preferred, he performed better, but in the end he was only able to work his way up to 42nd place. Nöckler was the third best Azzurro. Faster were Giandomenico Salvadori, who finished 20th, and Francesco De Fabiani. He fell from starting position 15 to 27th. All other Italians placed at the back of the field.

Johannes Høsflot Klæbo (NOR): “I'm overjoyed to be able to celebrate a victory here for the first time after being on the podium in Toblach last year. The new, hilly route suits my characteristics very well. Today I felt much better in the morning than I did on yesterday's race day. A big thank you goes to my service team, because my skis were amazing on the descents.”

Sergey Ustiugov (RUS): “I had a really good feeling throughout the entire race. I started cautiously, but always kept in touch with the leading group and finally really attacked again in the last few kilometers. Klaebo was simply too strong today, so second place is a great success for me.”

Alexey Poltoranin (KAZ): “It wasn't easy to move up from 14th place. I stuck to fast runners and thus made contact with the front runners. In the finish sprint I mobilized the last of my reserves of strength again – with success.”

Dietmar Nöckler (ITA/Brunico): “Today I can’t blame myself for anything. I threw everything into the balance again, but with this big gap from yesterday's race, I couldn't do anything more. I felt much better in classical style, even though I'm still far from my best. Now my focus is on the Tour de Ski, where a new season begins for me. Then it’s important to prepare optimally for the Olympics.”
