Charlotte Kalla breaks the Dobbiaco spell

The South Tyrolean World Cup stage opened on Saturday morning in fantastic winter weather and ideal cross-country skiing conditions. She found her great protagonist in Charlotte Kalla. She kept a low profile for the first few kilometers, but then she steadily felt her way forward and in the end shook off all the competition - especially the extremely strong Norwegians. With an unleashed final sprint, she took 5,8 seconds off Ragnhild Haga. The Norwegian had already speculated about her first individual World Cup victory. It was Kalla's third success of the season, who had never been on the winner's podium in Toblach before.

The 30-year-old Swede is thus further extending her lead in the overall World Cup. She is followed there in second and third place by Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg, who had to settle for sixth place today, and her Norwegian compatriot Heidi Weng. She was in the lead for a long time on the 10-kilometer route around the Nordic Arena, but lost a lot of time in the last few meters and in the end just made it onto the podium in third place.

The freestyle competition didn't go as planned for the host nation's athletes. Elisa Brocard was the only one to make it into the top 26 in 30th place. She showed a good performance, especially in the second half of the race. Completely different was Lucia Scardoni, who was well on track for a long time, but in the end she was passed through in 42nd position. Giulia Stürz (46th), Ilaria Debertolis (54th), Anna Comarella (57th), Caterina Ganz (62nd), Sara Pellegrini (65th) and Virginia De Martin Topranin (66th) were further down in the rankings . There was no South Tyrolean at the start.

Charlotte Kalla (SWE): “I can finally celebrate my first victory here in Dobbiaco. My goal was a podium finish, and it's even nicer that it was enough for first place in the end. Those were clearly my conditions today, but it wasn't easy with such strong competition. The Norwegian runners are extremely strong, it will be a really tight pursuit.”

Ragnhild Haga (NOR): “I'm doing really well this season, so running is twice as much fun. I'm very happy with this second place - also because it gives me a good starting point for the pursuit competition. This evening we will certainly discuss a few things as a team and come up with successful tactics for tomorrow’s race.”

Heidi Weng (NOR): “I am very pleased with this result. I always have difficulties on this route, today the last few kilometers were real torture. I had the impression that I could hardly move. But the outcome of the race showed me that I can run at the front despite all the problems. We can build on that.”

Charlotte Kalla breaks the Dobbiaco spell

The exceptional Swedish cross-country skier Charlotte Kalla left her mark on the first World Cup race in Toblach: She beat five Norwegians in the 10 km freestyle competition. In the early afternoon the program continues in the Nordic Arena with the men's race.
