Debertolis and Damgaard win at “Gsieser”

“It is a great satisfaction for me to have won again in Casies,” said a beaming Debertolis. “I knew that I had to set the rhythm from the start and I managed to do that, even though Tomas (Steurer, CoR) put up tough resistance.”

Last year's winner on the marathon distance (Debertolis) and the North Tyrolean (2009 winner on the short distance) fought a great duel over the entire distance. As long as the route was flat (up to km 28), the South Tyrolean Reinhard Kargruber, the Trentino riders Riccardo Mich, Moreno Giacomell, Ivan Debertolis and the German Benjamin Seifert, among others, also ran in the leading group. The preliminary decision was made where it has often been made in the past. On the climb to St. Magdalena, Debertolis gained a lead of 9 seconds over Steurer. He also won the South Tyrol Sprint at km 34. By the time he reached the finish, Debertolis was able to extend his lead to 37 seconds. For the 32-year-old from Trentino, it was the third success in South Tyrol this year after first place two weeks ago at the Toblach - Cortina fun run and victory in January at the Pustertal Ski Marathon. Third place went to Seifert.

Ingrid Damgaard is in a class of her own

Ingrid Damgaard celebrated an easy victory in the women's marathon race. The 23-year-old Norwegian from Re, north of Oslo, was beaming with the sun at the finish. However, she didn't realize at the finish line that she was actually the fastest woman. Damgaard was more than seven minutes ahead of the eight-time “Gsieser” winner Eugenia Bichougova and the German Renate Forstner. Among the 70 Norwegians who started today was the sister of the winner. Randi Damgaard took fourth place.

Bruno Debertolis wasn't the only Italian winner today. The 22-year-old Valentina Vuerich won the 30 km competition with a clear victory. It was the young woman from Trentino's first race over such a long distance. In the men's category, winner Peter Milz was twice as happy. The German celebrated his 47th birthday today.

The “Gsieser” continues tomorrow with the skating race over 42 and 30 km. There are several “Azzurri” at the start with Roland Clara, Thomas Moriggl, Pietro Piller Cottrer and Cristian Zorzi. They challenge the German Tom Reichelt (winner in 2008 and 2009) and Ole Einar Björndalen. Antonella Confortola and Eugenia Bichougova are the favorites for the women. Both have won several times in Casies.
