Debora Agreiter in a portrait: “I dream of an Olympic medal”

When Debora Agreiter set off for Turkey ten days ago, she knew that she had a unique chance of winning precious metal at the World Championships for young cross-country skiers. An opportunity that had to be exploited in Eastern Anatolia. “The cross-country ski trail in Turkey is at 1700 meters above sea level and has very long climbs. That suits me, I can show off all my strengths there. I was aware that I could win a medal. “It’s like a dream that it all worked out,” says Debora Agreiter, three days after the surprising success in Erzurum.

The success was celebrated at home in Stern and what couldn't be missed was the obligatory strudel. Because the likeable woman from Val Badia with a very sunny disposition loves these pastries.

The recipe for success: no pressure The 21-year-old attributes her success to the fact that she was able to run without pressure this year. “I already collected points in 26th place at the World Cup opener in Norway. From then on I was with the senior team and knew that I had no pressure to produce any results. That’s also the great thing about this first season in the World Cup, namely that I can gain my experience in peace,” Agreiter continues.

Agreiter also gained experience at the Tour de Ski at the turn of the year. The woman from Val Badia finished the most important stage race in 29th place. An experience that still inspires her almost two months later. “Especially the home races in Toblach and in Fiemme Valley were great. I liked the last stage the most, namely the ascent race to the Cermis. It felt like I was riding a Tour de France stage as I walked past the many, many fans.”

A friend persuades Debora to take a cross-country skiing course Debora Agreiter – like many other top South Tyrolean athletes – only got into cross-country skiing by chance. Her best friend Anna, who is still her best friend today, persuaded her to take a cross-country skiing course. And the blonde boy from Stern in Val Badia liked cross-country skiing straight away. But Debora also enjoyed other sports such as figure skating, athletics and cycling. “After secondary school, I decided to take up cross-country skiing. Tremendous progress came immediately. When I became Italian champion with the pupils, I intensified my training even more. My school education was also very important to me, which is why I didn't always have that much time to train before," says Agreiter, who belongs to the Carabinieri sports group. Previously, she was a member of the state squad and was until she was accepted into the national team another South Tyrolean sports great, was trained by Maria Canins and her husband.

It's obvious why Debora Agreiter got stuck with cross-country skiing. “I love the effort. And I'm addicted to exercise. I'm also out in nature. And cross-country skiing is varied, because in the summer I train with the bike, roller skis, go running or climb mountains,” says the outspoken family man. “My parents and my siblings are completely behind me. I feel safe at home. They are all a great support to me.”

In the long term, Debora Agreiter, who can best recover from her exertions by gardening and reading, dreams of an Olympic or World Cup medal. In the medium term she would like to qualify for the home World Cup next year in Fiemme Valley. If there is a good result in Trentino in 2013, then Debora Agreiter will certainly be rewarded with a huge piece of strudel.
