The countdown to the “Gsieser” is on

While numerous winter sports resorts complain about a lack of snow, there is a White Week atmosphere in the Gsieser Valley in the extreme north-east of South Tyrol. Everything in the valley is ready for the 28th edition of the Gsieser Valley Run on February 19th and 20th.

The 42 kilometers of trails are in perfect condition and the low temperatures of the past few days ensure that the surface remains compact for cross-country skiers. The OK around President Walter Felderer can be sure that the proud series will be extended without a single cancellation of the event.

Numerous stars will populate the “Gsieser” this year. State Governor Luis Durnwalder will also pay another visit to the event. And if the "Gsieser" already attracts political celebrities, then it is hardly surprising that new registrations keep coming in. The number of participating nations has now increased to 31. Even World Cup organizers are jealous of such numbers. Compared to the same period last year, enrollment is up 25 percent.

Among the cross-country skiing stars who will tackle the 28th edition are the two “Azzurri” Pietro Piller-Cottrer and Cristian “Zorro” Zorzi. The former is chasing his debut victory in the Casies Valley. Zorzi would like to add another to the 1999 podium finish.

The two Italians have to be careful of the German World Cup runner Tom Reichelt, who won the skating race in 2008 and 2009 and is now aiming for a hat trick. The Austrian Thomas Steurer, winner of the 2009 30 km classic, is also there. Among the superstars who will be competing in the Casies Valley in just over two weeks are, of course, the multiple mountain running world champion Jonathan Wyatt, who can hope for the support of his wife, the cross-country skier Antonella Confortola. And of course Ambassador Ole Einar Björndalen should not be missing. The biathlon king already won the “Gsieser” in 2001.

The Casies Valley is also known for its gastronomic initiatives, such as the dumpling marathon held last month. Numerous visitors took advantage of the opportunity and, after the marathon in the area's restaurants, also sought the challenge of cross-country skiing.

For all participants in the Gsieser Valley Run and generally until March 13th, it is possible in the northeasternmost valley of South Tyrol to combine sport with food culture through the "cross-country skiing diet". Many inns in the valley offer healthy and light meals at lunchtime, which cross-country skiers and day trippers prefer before exercising. This year, participants in the Gsieser Valley Run will once again receive highly qualified technical advice and professional waxing services along the route.

Traditionally, seven mountain bikes are raffled off among all participants at the “Gsieser”. The cross-country skiers of the “Mini-Gsieser” can also take part in the draw, which is on the program on Saturday at 15 p.m. In this sense, we wish the athletes double luck, both for the race and for the raffle.

The 28th edition of the Gsieser Valley Run is already a success. Participants come from 31 nations. All stars confirmed, event on everyone's lips. A special cross-country skiing diet awaits the demanding ones.
