The Gsieser Valley Run sets new standards

The 28th edition was recently presented on February 19th and 20th, 2011 in Pichl/Gsies. The OK with President Walter Felderer was confirmed for another three years. The OK also includes Erich Steinmair, Norbert Felderer, Erich Mayr, Hans Reier, Alfons Steiner, Wolfgang Steinmair, Peter Steinmayr, Alois Untersteiner, Arnold Untersteiner and Secretary General Franz Steinmair.

The race will take place on February 19, 2011 in the classic technique (30 or 42 km) and the following day in the freestyle technique (also 30 or 42 km). Each event begins at 10 a.m. The start and finish are in St. Martin. There is also the 18th Mini-Gsieser on Saturday at 15 p.m. over 3 or 5 km. The run for young people set a new record last year with 223 participants. The “Just for Fun” on Sunday is also part of the program, a race without timekeeping - to get a taste of it, so to speak. The cross-country skiing in the Gsieser Valley is once again part of the Euroloppet, Gran Fondo Master Tour and Italian Ranking racing series. The event's budget has now grown to 250.000 euros. The Gsieser Valley Run is South Tyrol's largest cross-country skiing event, but it still has one challenge to overcome: "I wish the 'Gsieser' that there will be 2217 participants this year, which is as many as our valley has inhabitants," said Mayor Paul Schwingshackl at the general meeting. At least 800 from 17 nations have already followed the First Citizen's call, including participants from the USA, Russia, Norway, Sweden and the United Arab Emirates.

The rush from the cradle of Nordic skiing can be traced back to Ole Einar Björndalen. The best biathlete of all time, winner of the Gsieser Valley Run in 2001, will be coming to the “Gsieser” this year. Björndalen is also an ambassador for the event.

The stars of the 28th edition also include Christian Zorzi, Tomasz Sikora and Jonathan Wyatt. Zorro, who had already triumphed in the Casies Valley in 1999, is a member of the Italian national cross-country skiing team. The Polish biathlete Tomasz Sikora was Olympic runner-up in 2006 and even world champion in Antholz in 1995. Jonathan Wyatt also succumbed to the charm of the “Gsieser” this year. The six-time mountain running world champion from New Zealand is the husband of Antonella Confortola, the two-time winner of the Gsieser Valley Run (1997 and 2001).

The chances that the Casies Valley will double its population, at least for the weekend of February 19th and 20th, 2011, are good. Compared to last year, enrollment has currently increased by 20 percent.

43.842 registrations from 42 countries, over 2000 participants regularly for four years, around 350 volunteers: the Gsieser Valley Run is without a doubt the top event among South Tyrol's cross-country skiing events and number two in Italy behind the Marcialonga.
