The cross-country skiing star's grief: "It's so brutal"

Christmas is the festival of love, the festival of joy. But for Ingvild Flugstad Østberg there was news on this particular weekend that really bothered her: she will not be able to take part in the Olympic Games. “This really isn't the present I was hoping for for Christmas. Hopefully Santa will treat me better in the future,” writes the Norwegian on social media. Østberg is currently one of the most successful cross-country skiers competing in the World Cup. She won three Olympic medals, six World Championship medals and 17 races in the top racing series for cross-country skiers. She also won the overall World Cup in the 2018/19 season. But the worm has been in there for some time. Health causes problems The 31-year-old missed the entire last season due to a broken foot and celebrated her comeback in November. But now the next bitter news: For health reasons she has to take a break and will not be taking part in any more competitions for the time being. “My dreams are shattered.” Ingvild Flugstad Østberg "Being with my 'second family' again was amazing for me," she wrote in an emotional post on social media. “It was so much fun, but what was more important was the feeling of happiness to finally be able to do what I love so much again. Unfortunately there will be no more races. It feels so brutal after all the hard work and the good feelings on skis. My dreams are shattered.” Øystein Andersen, the doctor for the Norwegian cross-country skiing team, explained the decision as follows: “The first races have shown that her health situation cannot withstand the racing program. Ingvild therefore has to take another longer break from competition, which unfortunately means that the Olympics come too early.” At the World Cup two weeks ago in Davos she came eighth over 10 km. Now Ingvild Flugstad Østberg experienced one of the hardest moments of her career.
