The stages in Toblach are the heart of the Tour de Ski

The Tour de Ski 2011/2012 has a very special significance for cross-country skiers. While footballers are taking part in the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine and summer athletes are looking forward to the Olympic Games in London, there is no so-called “big event” for winter athletes and therefore also for cross-country skiers. With one exception: the Tour de Ski. That's why the international cross-country skiing stars like Petter Northug (Norway), the Swiss Dario Cologna and Marcus Hellner from Sweden among the men, or the Polish Justyna Kowalczyk, Marit Bjoergen from Norway and Petra Majdic (Slovenia) among the women definitely focus on this ten-day stage race, which will begin on December 29th, 2011 in Oberhof in Germany and end on January 8th, 2012 in Fiemme Valley (Trentino).

The focus is inevitably on the three stages in Toblach, a novelty in the history of the Tour de Ski in Alta Pusteria. For the first time, a total of six races will be held in the eastern half of the country. First of all, official training is planned for Monday, January 2nd around the jewel box “Nordic Arena”, one of the most beautiful cross-country skiing stadiums in the world.

After that, it's all about the sausage: on Tuesday, January 3rd, the individual races over 5 kilometers for men and 3,3 kilometers for women will take place. Thursday, January 4th will once again be dominated by the exciting sprint races, while on Friday, January 5th there will be the individual race with a handicap start from Cortina to Dobbiaco in the “Dolomites” World Heritage Site for men (35 kilometers) or a 15-kilometer race for women - always with a handicap start.

“We had the opportunity to add a third day of competition this year and took advantage of this unique opportunity. For us, it is recognition from the FIS that we have been awarded two more races,” said OC boss Herbert Santer at the press conference. “The World Cup races in South Tyrol and especially the Tour de Ski in Toblach are a calling card for our country. You can tell that there are people at work here who love the sport. I wish the organizing committee every success with the event,” said state governor Luis Durnwalder, while mayor Guido Boccher praised the extremely good cooperation with Cortina. “Thanks to these events, Dobbiaco is a cross-country skiing paradise all over the world, because our wonderful nature reaches people's living rooms through television images,” concluded Boccher.

That was the Tour de Ski 2010/2011 in Toblach Last year in Toblach, the Canadian Devon Kershaw and the Slovenian Petra Majdic celebrated victories in the two sprint races. Kershaw beat Dario Cologna from Switzerland and Norway's Petter Northug to their places. Majdic was ahead of two athletes from the Italian national team, which of course made the numerous fans in and around the Nordic Arena very happy: the now retired Arianna Follis and Magda Genuin.

In the individual race from Cortina to Dobbiaco, Cologna laid the foundation for the eventual overall victory in the Tour de Ski with a new course record of 1:20.06,9 hours. Justyna Kowalczyk from Poland lost a lot of time to her pursuers Arianna Follis and Marianna Longa in the women's 15-kilometer race, but she won in the Hochpustertal as well as later in the overall ranking.

As far as the Tour de Ski is concerned, a South Tyrolean cross-country skier also showed his best side in the most important stage race. Roland Clara from Reischach finished the competition in fifth place after around 120 kilometers and eight stages in Oberstdorf, Oberhof, Toblach/Cortina and in the Fiemme Valley.
