Dietmar Nöckler on the trail of “Father Rotbart” Haspinger

The classic style race was fiercely contested until the last meter. In the end, Dietmar Nöckler triumphed, he also had a red beard, although not a full Haspinger beard. Thanks to a strong finish, Nöckler secured victory in 1:43.38,8, just a tenth of a second ahead of the surprisingly strong Czech Jiri Rocarek. Third place went to Luca Orlando (1:44.00) from the police sports group. Just under 1000 cross-country skiers from 39 nations turned the “Gsieser” into a colorful sports festival on the first day. There were many big names in the cross-country skiing scene at the start, such as Bruno Debertolis and Dietmar Nöckler.

42km race a treat

In the men's race over 42 km, the favorites immediately took the lead. After a phase of checking each other out between the 15-strong leading group, Nöckler, Orlandi and Rocarek fought a thrilling three-way battle - much to the delight of the numerous cross-country skiing enthusiasts along the route. The three tackled the Magdalener Hill - normally the decisive criterion in the "Gsieser" - together. Rocarek was able to gain a small lead up to the highest point. Orlandi had to let it go, Nöckler was the only one who could keep up. Orlando was then able to watch a thrilling duel between Rocarek and Nöckler in third position on the downhill section to the finish in St. Martin. On the home straight, Nöckler looked like the sure winner. Rocarek changed lanes again and tried desperately to pass Nöckler. But too late: With the spirit of Father Haspinger, Nöckler, the heir of "Father Rotbart", saves the victory. The South Tyrolean then enjoyed swimming in the crowd. "I did it. Winning is always nice, this race is particularly important for us South Tyroleans," said a beaming Dietmar Nöckler. In the women's category, the Austrian Katerina Smutna came out ahead of Adela Boudikova and Valentina Shevchenko. Smutna won comfortably and was therefore in a good mood: "Compliments to the organizers, the route was great, everything went smoothly for me today." Only 17 men were faster than Smutna today. Over the 30 km distance, the podium was reserved exclusively for runners from abroad. In the men's category, the Czech Miroslav Rypl won ahead of the German Christian Winker and another Czech, Radek Sretr. In the women's category, the German Jessica Müller came out ahead of the Austrian Petra Tanner and her countrywoman Franziska Müller. The skating races will follow on Sunday at the same distances, starting at 10 a.m.
