Diggins spoils the Sweden party

31-year-old Jessie Diggins broke through the Scandinavian cross-country skiing phalanx at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Planica on Tuesday. The American won her first individual gold at a major event in the 10 km skating, at the tenth attempt since the Oslo World Cup in 2011. The 13-time World Cup winner won this individual race 14,0 seconds ahead of the Swede Frida Karlsson and 19,5 seconds ahead of her compatriot Ebba Andersson. The sixth place of Francesca Franchi from Trento (+51,2) was surprising.

Diggins secured the US women's first individual World Championships gold in cross-country skiing, so her performance was also historic. She started between the duo Andersson and Karlsson, who were ahead in the skiathlon at the weekend. The trio was together until half of the race, but after that the eventual winner made decisive gains. This time the Norwegians came away empty-handed. Anne Kjersti Kalvaa (+35,1) and Ingvild Flugstad (+46,6) finished the competition in fourth and fifth place.

It is Diggins' second medal overall in these championships after team sprint bronze. In the individual sprint, we only managed 21st position. She achieved silver in the 10 km distance in Falun eight years ago, and Diggins also won an individual medal in a distance race at a major event a year ago in the Olympic 30 km competition.
