Brazen theft from top cross-country skier: “That’s disgusting”

In summer, the winter sports stars work on their form in the dry. A popular training tool, especially for endurance athletes such as cross-country skiers or biathletes: the bicycle. It's just a shame if it keeps getting stolen. The Norwegian top cross-country skier Pål Golberg recently had this experience.

Recently, the 2021 relay world champion had two bicycles worth a total of 85.000 crowns (around 8300 euros) stolen from his dorm in Oslo. Not the first time: Since he moved into this house five years ago, there have been several break-ins, with the crooks always targeting his bike.

“It’s frustrating,” Golberg told the Norwegian television station TV2 . “We are insured, but it's annoying to lose so much time with it.” Because of the previous break-ins, the cross-country skier, who won silver in the relay at the Olympic Games in February, has installed surveillance cameras. “Five burglars broke into the building. We gave the recordings to the police,” said the 31-year-old. Is anyone here? Aren't such burglaries frightening? “The first time it felt disgusting. I don't understand what kind of people they are," said Golberg, who suspects that it is the same gang that is responsible for a large number of bicycle thefts in Oslo.

The seven-time World Cup winner also had a sneaking suspicion that something was happening in his house last night of the break-in. “I woke up and thought there was someone here. But I was in a trance and then fell asleep again. Later we discovered that there had actually been a break-in that night. I don’t feel unsafe, but I think it would have been great to catch them in the act.”
