An Azzurro stands up to Bolshunov in the Val di Fiemme

The 27-year-old Azzurro came in second in the mass start over 15 kilometers in the classic technique and was only beaten by the outstanding Alexander Bolshunov in the final sprint. The tour leader passed the Italian on the home straight.

In addition to De Fabiani, only one other non-Russian ended up in the top 7, the sixth-placed German Janosch Brugger. Italy's sprint specialist Federico Pellegrino finished 36th.

Bolshunov, who is now almost three minutes ahead of Frenchman Maurice Manificat (2.37 minutes) and his compatriot Ivan Yakimushkin (2.47) in the overall standings, celebrated his 5th win in a row on Friday. De Fabiani is the best Azzurro in the overall ranking in 11th place. He is 5.16 minutes behind Bolshunov. A German shines among the ladies Katharina Hennig gave the ladies a little surprise. The American Jessica Diggins continues to lead the overall tour standings, only finishing in 9th place this time. Diggins is 55 seconds ahead of the Russian Yulia Stupak before the final two stages in Fiemme Valley. The previously second-placed American Rosie Brennan (31st) slipped back to 7th place. Two Swedes, Frida Karlsson (+3 minutes) and Ebba Andersson (+4), are currently in third and fourth place. The best Azzurra, Anna Comarella, is ranked 1,42st overall.
