Punch and bad check: Bolshunov ticks out

Alexander Bolshunov is currently the best cross-country skier in the World Cup. But on Sunday the hothead from Russia lost his nerve. In the relay race he started as the last runner for his team Russia I, when the fateful scene occurred in the finish sprint.

Bolshunov and Finn Joni Mäki fought doggedly for second place. Mäki was in the lead and cut off Bolshunov in the last few meters so that the Russian could no longer overtake. This frustrated Bolshunov so much that he hit Mäki wildly with his fist and sticks and then rammed him to the ground behind the finish line at full speed and in the best ice hockey style.

Bolshunov & Co. finished the race in third place, but after this bully act the quartet was disqualified. The victory went to Norway, who beat Finland I with a 3-second lead. Russia II ended up in third place. The Norwegian quartet also won in the women's category, ahead of Sweden and Finland I.

Since all the top nations were at the start in Lahti with their best runners, the race was definitely a pointer to the World Cup. There could be a Norwegian festival there: The Scandinavians, who celebrated their comeback in Lahti after almost two months out of the World Cup as a precautionary measure in the corona pandemic, had a quadruple victory in the men's and a triple victory in the individual races on Saturday impressed women.
