Franz Göring wins in the Gsieser Valley

A pleasant sun and the “real” cold – as many expressed at the end of the race – greeted almost a thousand cross-country skiers at the start and in the first few kilometers today.

Out of the valley from St. Martin towards the Pichl district, the race was fairly even with a first group of fifteen athletes, including the strongest runners, who set the pace. The Czechs Rezac and Rocarek, the Germans Göring, Freimuth and Gerstenberger and the Italians Debertolis, Morandini, Cerutti, Bonaldi, Brigadoi and Paredi ran in this group. At the turnaround at kilometer 16 the situation was unchanged, with only a few athletes losing touch, such as the Trentino Nicola Morandini, who suffered from back pain. In the women's race, the Czech Boudikova broke away immediately after the start and the blonde athlete from Nove Mesto was still leading by a few minutes over her pursuers.

At kilometer 20 the decision of the day comes with an acceleration of a group of four consisting of Rezac, Debertolis, Rocarek and Göring. With Gerstenberger, another German was able to hold the group and the hunt for the podium had officially begun. Rezac set a high pace that all escape companions were able to maintain until they returned to St. Martin, before the climb to St. Magdalena begins. At this point, Gerstenberger, who was already second over 42 km classic two years ago, decided to run over 30 km and he later took victory ahead of the Trentinos Riccardo Mich and Ivan Debertolis, who ended up being a few seconds behind the Teuton had. The climb of St. Magdalena has always been the crucial section of the Gsieser Valley Run and Rezac seemed in a condition to be able to control the race at any time. Rezac crossed the highest point of the route with a 6 second lead over the Debertolis-Goering duo.

From this point on, Franz Göring ignited the turbo on his narrow skis and on the descent he left Debertolis and later the Czech giants behind. The result: final victory for the German ahead of Rezac, Debertolis, Rocarek and Paredi.

German victory also among women In the women's race, where the young German Alexandra Svoboda won on the short distance ahead of Maja Zimmermann (KAN) and the Lombard Chiara Caminada, the Czech Boudikova won on the long distance with over 10 minutes behind her pursuers Martina Stursova (Czech Republic) and the German Renate Forstner (11 or 12 minutes behind at the end).

The Italian Paraolympic cross-country skier Enzo Masiello, who competes for the police sports group “Fiamme Oro” from Moena and will be competing in the 2014 Paraolympics in Sochi in a few days, also took part in the race today.

Tomorrow the Gsieser Valley Run continues with the freestyle competition over 42 and 30 kilometers. The Austrian Johannes Dürr and many athletes from the Italian military sports groups will also be at the start at 10 a.m., as points for the Italian Cup will also be awarded during the run.
