Five South Tyroleans nominated for the Tour de Ski

The Tour de Ski 2013/14 traditionally begins on Saturday, December 28th in Oberhof in Germany with a short prologue. On Sunday, December 29th, a pursuit race in classic technique is on the program.

The cross-country skiing World Cup entourage then moves to Lenzerheide in Switzerland. The program here includes a sprint (free technique) on New Year's Day and a mass start in the classic technique on New Year's Day.

The Tour de Ski then moves to South Tyrol. Only one Tour de Ski race will be held in Dobbiaco this year because the World Cup is coming to Alta Pusteria for a second time at the beginning of February. A pursuit race is being run. The men's race will go from Cortina to Dobbiaco, while the women will run a 15km race on the trails around the picturesque Nordic Arena.

Afterwards the Tour de Ski entourage moves one last time to the Fiemme Valley. The big finale will take place there, and on the final day, January 5th, the cross-country skiing elite will be able to climb the Cermis.

Clara and Moriggl there for the fifth time

The same five cross-country skiers from South Tyrol are at the start this year as last year. Roland Clara and Thomas Moriggl are taking part in the Tour de Ski for the fifth time. Clara has already finished the toughest stage race in the world in fifth position and was able to achieve several top results in the ascent race on the Cermis. There he took second place once (2011), and in the last edition he came third. Hofer has often underlined his sprinting qualities; he was most successful in 2012 when he came fourth in front of his own audience in Toblach.

Moriggl has competed in every edition of the Tour de Ski since 2010. He has similarly good “climbing qualities” as Roland Clara, which is why he also achieved very good results on the final stage on the Cermis, such as in the last two years, where he finished fifth in each case.

Dietmar Nöckler and Debora Agreiter are at the start for the third time. Nöckler would like to prove his sprinting skills once again and also shine in the classic running technique competitions, while Agreiter would like to gain competition practice after an injury with a view to the Olympic Games in Sochi.

The defending champions are the Polish Justyna Kowalczyk, who has already won the Tour de Ski four times, and the Russian Alexander Legkow.

Sunday, January 5, 2014 - Fiemme Valley: Pursuit race “final climb” free technique (9 km men and women)
