Big innovations in the cross-country skiing circus

There are some new features in the Cross Country World Cup in the 2022/2023 season. The traditional final stages of the Tour de Ski continue to take place in Lago di Tesero and on Alpe Cermis. In addition, two further World Cup stations will be held in Italy. After the contract with the German city of Dresden expired, Milan was awarded one of the two city sprints in the World Cup. On January 21st and 22nd there will be an individual and a team sprint in downtown Milan.

After a year-long absence from the cross-country skiing World Cup, Toblach is back on the calendar with three World Cup races, although for a while there was little prospect of Toblach returning to the World Cup. Organizing a normal World Cup is generally a lot more expensive than a Tour de Ski, where the FIS provides much more sponsorship money. From February 3rd to 5th, a skating sprint, a ten kilometer individual start race, and a relay will take place in the Nordic Arena. Dobbiaco will be the dress rehearsal for the World Championships in Planica, Slovenia. The World Cup traditionally begins in Ruka, Finland, on November 25, 2022 and ends in Lathi on March 26, 2023.

3 stages in Italy There are drastic changes to the regulations from the FIS Congress in Milan; for the first time, women will run the same distances as men. To achieve this, some men's race routes were reduced. From now on, the race will be 10 kilometers (individual start), 20 kilometers (skiathlon/pursuit) and 50 kilometers (mass start).

Outgoing FIS President Vegard Ulvang explained that the upcoming season would be a test to understand which distances would be best suited for both genders. 57 percent of all nations voted for equality in distances. Italy, Austria and Russia, among others, voted against it. The old distances will still be used at the upcoming World Championships in Planica, but the new distances could be run at a major event for the first time in 2025.

There will also be a new format for awarding World Cup points. Further changes include more starting places in the World Cup for smaller nations and the anchoring of the mixed relay in the World Cup calendar.

After there was no cross-country skiing World Cup in Dobbiaco last winter for the first time in eleven years, the cross-country skiing stronghold in Hochpustertal is back in the World Cup calendar. There is also a city event in Milan.
