Gsieser Valley Run: Moriggl wins the short distance

Sergio Bonaldi from Serena (BG) secured victory in the 29th Gsieser Valley Run in the classic technique. In the last 500 meters he intercepted Andy Gerstenberger, who had been leading until then. The German crashed spectacularly, paving the way for the “Azzurro” to achieve his first success at the “Gsieser”. Bruno Carrara, also a member of the national marathon team, followed in third place, narrowly relegating last year's winner Bruno Debertolis to fourth place. “It was a nice race and by no means easy, because my direct rival had very fast skis,” said Bonaldi. "I had to fight hard on the last climb before I was able to catch up with Gerstenberger again on the descent. In the end I had the luck I needed." Gerstenberger, on the other hand, was very unlucky: "After many kilometers and heavy legs, I lost concentration at the end. It's a shame, because I had done an excellent race up to that point," said the 24-year-old, who was a member of the German national team until last year.

The leading group was closed until the junction shortly before the finish of the 30 km race. While the marathon runners pushed their way up the slope to St. Magdalena, Thomas Moriggl and Cristian Zorzi turned towards the finish and delivered an exciting finish sprint down to the very last meter. Victory was ultimately secured by Moriggl, who had already won the 42 km sprint skating race in Casies last year. Third place went to Reinhard Kargruber.

In the women's race, Barbara Felderer celebrated a start-to-finish victory on the short course. “Winning at home is something very special,” said Felderer, happy about her first home win. The woman from Casies relegated Chiara Caminada from Piedmont and the former ski roller junior world champion Ilenia Casali from Friuli to the ranks of honor.

While Moriggl and Felderer celebrated at the finish, the men's marathon runners fought an exciting battle on the climb to St. Magdalena. Gerstenberger led the field ahead of Bonaldi, followed closely behind by Debertolis and Carrara. But the inexperience and the heavy legs after more than 40 km played tricks on the German. And so, somewhat unexpectedly, Bonadli received the laurel wreath for the winner. Germany could still celebrate, because Renate Forstner was practically unrivaled among the women. Mara Zamboni from Lombardy and the Norwegian Iren Tryggestad took distant second and third place under bright blue skies and perfectly groomed trails.

The Gsieser Valley Run 2012 will continue tomorrow with the skating race over 42 and 30 km. The starting field inevitably brings back memories of the Olympic Games in Turin in 2006, when the quartet Cristian Zorzi, Giorgio Di Centa, Fulvio Valbusa and Pietro Piller Cottrer won gold in the 19 x 4 km relay exactly on February 10th. Tomorrow only Valbusa will be missing from this quartet. Roland Clara (second behind Moriggl in 2011), Fabio Santus and the "Azzurre" Antonella Confortola, Marina Piller and Sabina Vabusa will also be at the start together with the Olympians. However, the two Germans Tom Reichelt and Franz Göring, who were called to the 15 km World Cup in Poland at short notice, canceled at the last moment, where they performed admirably today. Reichelt's rejection was most regretted by his parents, who had come specifically to the Gsieser Valley. The starting signal for the skating race will take place tomorrow at 10 a.m. in St. Martin.
