“I gambled it away myself”: Nöckler’s only drawback on the tour

“Overall, I can draw a positive conclusion,” explained Dietmar Nöckler after the Tour de Ski, which ended on Sunday. But: “A real top result was missing. I lost that myself.”

This top result would have been possible on Saturday at the classic mass start over 15 kilometers. For a long time, Nöckler was in a promising position and was running for the top 15. “However, on the last descent I crashed in the last corner. That's a shame, otherwise a place between 10 and 14 would have been possible. The performance was okay, the result wasn’t what I wanted,” explains the 34-year-old from Bruneck.

In the end he had to make do with the – still decent – 23rd place, just 23,8 seconds behind the victorious Johannes Klaebo. The Norwegian won the 6th of 6 stages of the Tour de Ski on Saturday, only yesterday, Sunday, when he was denied a victory in the freestyle race up to Alpe Cermis. Of course, he still confidently won the overall victory on this tour.

Alpe Cermis not a favorite race Nöckler finished yesterday's “climbing” in 48th place, making him one of 53 athletes who completed the stage race. “This is not my race. “I’ve always worked hard here,” emphasized Nöckler. In the unpopular free style up to Alpe Cermis, the main thing was to “run at your own pace”. He achieved his goal of finishing the Tour de Ski. Even though he fell from 21st place to 27th in the overall ranking yesterday, the veteran from Pustertal can be satisfied.

“It was a great tour overall, with three classic distance races, which was ideal,” said Nöckler. He not only made it into the points in the 3 classic races (in addition to 3rd place on Saturday, he also scored 23th in the 28km pursuit and 10th in the classic individual start over 26km), but also in the freestyle. Pursuit over 10 kilometers (place 20).

Now some rehabilitation is on the agenda. On January 21st, Nöckler will take part in the La Diagonela in the Engadin, Switzerland. The classic 55-kilometer race is part of the prestigious Visma Ski Classics, a racing series for long-distance specialists.

The man from Bruneck would like to take part in the Marcialonga on January 29th, and the World Cup in Toblach is scheduled for the following weekend. Nöckler would be a candidate for the relay race on Sunday, February 5th. “I want to be there, that’s a big goal, after all it would be a home World Cup,” emphasizes the Pusterer.
