Races on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th December The World Cup weekend opens on Saturday, December 16th with the women's (10 km) and men's (15 km) skating races. On Sunday, however, a pursuit race will be run in the classic style.

OK boss Herbert Santer satisfied OC boss Herbert Santer: “On December 16th and 17th, Dobbiaco will host the cross-country skiing world cup for women and men. The race on Sunday will be particularly spectacular, as the pursuit race will take place in classic style on this day. Everything is ready in Dobbiaco. There is enough snow, as it has been snowing off and on in the last few weeks. To be on the safe side, artificial snow is also produced, but it will probably not be used. The crème de la crème of cross-country skiing will be at the start in Alta Pusteria and Dobbiaco will be a venue where qualification for the Olympic Games in February in South Korea is already at stake. For this year we have redesigned a section of the route. This has been given the name “Nathalie” and will add to the attractiveness of cross-country skiing. Today the routes are made shorter so that spectators can see more of the race and so that TV stations can broadcast the race in its entirety. I am convinced that these innovations will have a positive effect on cross-country skiing. I would particularly like to thank the many volunteers, the forestry authority, the financial police, the carabinieri and the Toblach volunteer fire department. Our figurehead Dietmar Nöckler, a member of the Italian national team, will also be at the start.”

Speakers underline the importance of the World Cup races

Andreas Trenker, President of the Toblach Tourism Association and Vice President of the Hochpustertal/Drei Zinnen Tourism Association, added: “We as a tourism association also have to take care of the cross-country ski trails. Thanks to the Santer family, who made their property available, and the municipality of Dobbiaco, we were able to improve the cross-country ski trail to Niederdorf. This means that the quality of the cross-country ski trails increases and more and more communities are involved in cross-country skiing. These trails are now open for use, even with the use of artificial snow.

The FISI was present with Vice President Sigurth Wachtler: “I bring the greetings of President Flavio Roda, who asked me to greet the Toblach OK team in particular. Many people envy us because of the great Nordic Arena in Toblach. It gives me particular pleasure when so many winter events are held in South Tyrol. The organizing committees do an excellent job and are of international standard. In addition, there are always countless volunteers in South Tyrol, without whom such events would hardly be possible. The successes that South Tyrolean winter sports enthusiasts celebrate also prove that we are working in the right direction. In particular, Dobbiaco has a tradition of cross-country skiing and modern winter sports facilities. Guido Bocher Mayor of Toblach: “Our community tries and wants to be present at these important sporting events, because this means that the name Toblach goes out all over the world. Toblach has made a very good name for itself in recent years. Getting a race like this every year is difficult, as difficult as the races are for the athletes. Our Nordic Arena is known far beyond the borders as an excellent facility. This is now important not only for competitive sports, but also for popular sports and tourism. The Lord gave us the Three Peaks and at the foot of these breathtaking mountains you can practice cross-country skiing, it's just such a joy.”

The director of the Office of Sport Armin Hölzl added: “The World Cup races in Toblach are very important because it is one of the most important winter sports events in South Tyrol. The races are world class and we are very happy to support this event because it is of utmost importance for the entire cross-country skiing movement. In addition to the local athletes, the rest of the Italian national team and all important foreign athletes will also be at the start. “He would like to be thanked very much for the effort that Herbert Santer puts into this.”

The cross-country skiing entourage will stop again in Toblach in December 2018. But then as part of the Tour de Ski.
