Italy's star cross-country skiers are taking unusual paths

No stone is left unturned in Italy's cross-country skiing camp. With a view to the upcoming Olympic season, the team has been completely revamped. A South Tyrolean plays a central role, namely Alfred Stauder. The Toblacher is the new sports director for cross-country skiers. This means that Stauder, who looked after the young talent last season and was previously the head coach of the cross-country skiers, has a big task on his hands. “I will give everything together with my team,” the man from Dobbiaco is quoted as saying on the website of the Italian Winter Sports Association. “Above all, it is important to us to grow the cross-country skiing movement in Italy, especially with a view to the upcoming Olympic Games. In the spring we will take stock of the last season,” says Stauder, full of energy. Pellegrino and De Fabiani emigrate The big news doesn't concern Alfred Stauder, but rather the two Italian stars Federico Pellegrino and Francesco De Fabiani. You will not be preparing for the upcoming season with the Azzurri team, but will be “emigrating” to Russia. Together with the Russian top stars Gleb Retivych, Sergej Ustyugov, Artem Maltsev and Evgeniy Belov, the two Azzurri will be fine-tuning their form from May onwards. This international training group, which will work under the leadership of Russia coach Markus Cramer, aims to prepare the athletes for the Olympics in the best possible way. Once the season begins, Pellegrino (16 World Cup wins) and De Fabiani (nine podiums) will rejoin the Italian team. A slightly different preparation, but one that makes perfect sense: The two exceptional talents are currently the only world-class cross-country skiers in Italy's team, so there are no opportunities for comparison. These are now being created with the international training group.
