Jessica Diggins surprises everyone in the Nordic Arena

The spectators in the Nordic Arena couldn't believe their eyes: Instead of the tour leader Ingvild Flugstad Østberg or the top favorite Therese Johaug, a blatant outsider, Jessica Diggins, beamed from the winner's podium. The 24-year-old US girl is by no means a “no name” in the international cross-country skiing circuit. In 2013 she won World Championship gold in the team sprint, and in the previous season she won silver at the title fights in Östersund. However, she has yet to achieve a podium finish in the World Cup. “I still can’t believe it. Today everything just worked out. Now I have to let this first impression sink in,” said the overwhelmed winner of the day in the finish area.

Diggins laid the foundation for her debut victory with a brilliant performance on the five-kilometer-long cross-country ski run in Alta Pusteria. Right from the start she recorded absolute top values before she increased the pace again on the last section and the stopwatch finally stopped at 13.15,5:0,9 seconds. At this point, all the candidates for victory were biting their teeth. Norway's Heidi Weng took second place, XNUMX seconds behind, followed by her compatriot Østberg. She was able to slightly extend her lead over Johaug in the overall ranking of the Tour de Ski. The cross-country skiing star from Scandinavia, who had recently been a bit weak, had to settle for fifth place.

Azzurre miss out on top spot

The starters from the host nation also had no experience of success in the skating competition. Virginia De Martin Topranin was the best Italian. She finished 35,7th, 20 seconds behind. Debora Agreiter from Gadertal, however, missed out on the top 35 places in 30th place.
