Johaug's winning streak broken - Klæbo takes a big step

On the penultimate day of the World Cup final in Quebec/Canada, 30-year-old Johaug had to settle for second place in the classic mass start over 10 km in the finish sprint from Swede Stina Nilsson. Best “Azzurra” was Elisa Brocard in 22nd place.

Johaug suffered her last defeat in a distance race before her doping ban on March 12, 2016 in Canmore, Canada. In her comeback season, the ten-time world champion had previously won twelve of twelve races. In the fight for the overall World Cup, Johaug's compatriot Ingvild Flugstad Østberg took third place from her Russian opponent Natalja Neprjajewa (19th) and can hardly be caught in the pursuit of the 10 km freestyle on Sunday.

Klæbo wins the men's event After his sprint victory on Friday, Klæbo also prevailed over 15 kilometers in the classic technique, putting further points between himself and his Russian rival Alexander Bolshunov, who finished seventh. Canadian Alex Harvey and Didrik Tønseth from Norway also made it to the podium. Best “Azzurro” was Francesco De Fabiani in fourth place. Sprint specialist Federico Pellegrino finished 14th. There was no South Tyrolean at the start.

After his eleventh win of the season, Klæbo continues to lead ahead of the Russian Alexander Bolshunow, who came seventh on Saturday. But with a victory over 15 km on Sunday, Bolshunow could still overtake him.

Norway's star cross-country skier Therese Johaug has suffered a defeat in a distance race for the first time in more than three years. In the men's race, Johannes Høsflot Klæbo celebrated the next victory and thus took a big step towards overall World Cup success.
