Combination: Faißt fifth in Hakuba, Schmid wins

Hakuba (SID) Combiner Manuel Faißt (Baiersbronn) missed his second podium finish at the World Cup in Hakuba, Japan. In the absence of the German Pyeongchang riders around record world champion Johannes Rydzek and Olympic champion Eric Frenzel, the 24-year-old had to settle for fifth place on Sunday, one day after his third place in the opening race. Norwegian Jan Schmid secured his third win of the season with a lead of 6,6 seconds over Estonian Kristjan Ilves. Japan's top combined athlete Akito Watabe, who won his fourth World Cup race in a row on Saturday in Hakuba, took third place (+11,1). Watabe successfully defended his lead in the overall World Cup, but with 905 points he is only just ahead of Schmid (885). Of the best combined athletes, only Watabe and Schmid were at the start in Japan just under a week before the start of the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang (February 9th to 25th). The Olympic nominees Rydzek, Frenzel, Fabian Rießle, Vinzenz Geiger and Björn Kircheisen are completing the final preparation phase in Oberstdorf. The second best German in Hakuba on Sunday was Terence Weber (Geyer) in tenth place ahead of Tobias Simon (Breitnau) in eleventh place. David Welde (Sohland) also collected World Cup points in 21st place.
