Combination: Rießle second behind Watabe in Oslo

Oslo (SID) Team Olympic champion Fabian Rießle narrowly missed his second success of the season at the Nordic Combined World Cup in Oslo. The 27-year-old took second place after catching up on the cross-country ski trail, but had to hand over the victory at Holmenkollen to Akito Watabe. The Japanese further extended his lead in the overall World Cup with his sixth success of the winter. After a good jump, Rießle went from eighth place to cross-country skiing, where he swallowed up almost the entire field. After ten kilometers he was only 15,5 seconds behind Watabe, who had already won last year. Third place went to the Austrian Mario Seidl. The second best German was Manuel Faißt (Baiersbronn) in sixth. The two German individual Olympic champions Johannes Rydzek (Oberstdorf) and Eric Frenzel (Oberwiesenthal) had already lost every chance of victory in the jumping and finished in eighth and tenth place. Both entered the trail almost two minutes behind. “Even a monster run doesn’t help me anymore,” Rydzek said before the run. Rydzek also suffered a serious setback in the fight for the overall World Cup. With 632 points, the Allgäu resident remains third behind Watabe (1050) and the Norwegian Jan Schmid (949), who took fourth place on Saturday in front of King Harald. Rießle (631) is now fourth, but there are still six races left. The next one follows on Tuesday in Trondheim. The other DSV starters also fell short of expectations, especially on the hill. Veteran Björn Kircheisen (Johanngeorgenstadt), who had not progressed beyond the role of spectator in Pyeongchang, had to be content with 22nd place. Team Olympic champion Vinzenz Geiger (Oberstdorf) even decided not to start cross-country skiing after a botched jump. It was time to say goodbye for Mikko Kokslien. The Norwegian completed the last competition of his career on his 33rd birthday and was waved off by his little daughter Vilja. For Kokslien, who won World Cup silver with the team in 2015 and 2017, it was only enough for 25th place.
