Nöckler after training fall: “I’m in a lot of pain”

Nöckler has achieved a lot in his career. The Pusterer won, among other things, two World Championship medals in the team sprint. After a weak 2018/19 season, he is no longer an integral part of the national team, but is trying to make it on his own. This was a mutual decision at the time.

Nöckler would have qualified for the World Cup opener in Ruka, Finland (near Kuusamo), but after a fall in training last Friday he had to cancel. In the SportNews In the interview, the 31-year-old reveals, among other things, how he is feeling after this fall.

How are you feeling now and what exactly happened last Friday?

Dietmar Nöckler: “I fell and hit myself in the ribs with a stick. Now I have chest pain and trouble breathing. That's why I can't train at the moment. Although I don’t think it’s anything long-term, I’m still in a lot of pain.”

“I won’t bury my head in the sand” That's doubly bitter when you consider that you would have been in the squad in Ruka. How did you stalk back?

“I trained a lot in the summer and, among other things, completed 6.000 training kilometers on the bike. Most recently, I won a test race in Davos in which Italy's B team took part. That's also why I qualified for the start. The fact that I have to take a break is bitter because I felt like I was in good shape. But I won’t bury my head in the sand.”

What are your goals for the coming season?

“In the short term, I hope that I can be there again at the Continental Cup next week. I would also like to take part in the Tour de Ski, although this time it is skating-heavy. But if you're not there, then you won't be able to take part in the remaining races in January and there would be some interesting ones. I just have to lay the foundation before the Tour de Ski in order to be able to take part in these races. For example, with good results in the Continental Cup.”

Who are your top favorites for the new season and what do you think the Azzurri can do?

“My favorites to win the overall World Cup and the Tour de Ski are clearly Klæbo, Bolshunov and Ustiugov. I'm curious to see if anyone can hold a candle to these three. From the Azzurri's perspective, Pellegrino and De Fabiani are of course always good for top spots. Of course, I also hope that Stefan Zelger can continue to establish himself.”

What's in it to start with? “The start in Ruka is never easy because, as always, the world's best will be at the start. Pellegrino is always good for a podium finish in the sprint, even if the race on Friday takes place in the classic technique. When the Italian winter sports association FISI presented the squad for the coming season, one prominent name was missing from the World Cup squad among cross-country skiers: Dietmar Nöckler. Although the man from Bruneck has now fought his way back, he cannot be there at the start.
