Nöckler and Pellegrino beam from the podium in Toblach

Nöckler and Pellegrino, who started the competition with podium ambitions, met their demands straight away and finished the semi-finals with the third best time. In the final, which was hard to beat in terms of tension, they made a spectacular comeback after Pellegrino was touched by Swede Teodor Peterson in the fifth lap and fell. Nöckler then rolled up the field from behind before Pellegrino secured a podium finish that was no longer thought possible.

“The fall threw us far back. That was bitter, but Didi (Nöckler, editor's note) made an incredible comeback. At the end I threw everything into the balance again,” said Pellegrino after the race. He and Nöckler experienced another shared success almost exactly one year after their debut victory in Planica. This is the sprint star from the Aosta Valley's second podium finish this season, while the 28-year-old from Bruneck celebrated the fourth top-three result of his World Cup career. His joy knew no bounds: “Standing on the podium here in Dobbiaco in front of my fans awakens incredible feelings of happiness. This is an absolute highlight of my career and an incredible boost of motivation ahead of the World Championships in Lahti.”

Only the Canadian surprise winners Len Valjas and Alex Harvey and the two Swedes Karl-Johan Westberg and Oskar Svensson were faster than the two Azzurri in Toblach. The North Americans held their own in the finish with a lead of half a second. The second Italian duo, the young Bozen native Stefan Zelger and Enrico Nizzi, were eliminated in the qualifying semi-finals.

Natalia Mateeva lands the brace

In the women's race, Natalia Mateeva achieved a total triumph. 24 hours after her victory in the individual sprint, she also won the team competition with her Russian teammate Yulia Belorukova. The two Eastern Europeans won the heart-stopping final against the Swedish duo Ingemarsdotter/Falk and Jacobsen/Falla from Norway in the photo finish.

Ilaria Debertolis and Gaia Vuerich were the best Italians. Finishing eleventh, they narrowly missed out on a place in the top ten.

Nöckler and Pellegrino beam from the podium in Toblach

The World Cup weekend in the Nordic Arena ended with an absolute highlight: local hero Dietmar Nöckler and Federico Pellegrino made it to third place in the team sprint. The final victories went to the teams from Canada and Russia.
