Norway's relay cannot be beaten

Final runner Johannes Høsflot Klæbo broke away from Russian Sergey Ustiugov at the end of the penultimate lap on Friday and won his country's tenth gold in Seefeld by a large margin. The quartet from France secured bronze in the sprint against Finland in light rain.

After an elimination race with a lot of Norwegian and Russian leadership, the expected sprint to the finish line between arch-rivals Klæbo and Ustiugov surprisingly came to nothing. The Russian suddenly lost touch with Klæbo after two thirds of his skating section. The 22-year-old ran to his third title in Tyrol, cheered by many Norwegian fans among the 12.600 spectators. “It’s very cool to win the gold medal here with the boys, of course I’m very happy,” said Klæbo happily.

With him, Emil Iversen, Martin Johnsrud Sundby and Sjur Røthe celebrated their second gold medal in Seefeld. The Norwegians secured their tenth World Cup men's relay title in a row; their last “defeat” came in 1999 in Ramsau behind sensational winners Austria. This time the host country wasn't even at the start after the blood doping violations of Max Hauke and Dominik Baldauf. “Azzurri” knocked off The Italian relay team finished the race in 10th place. Maicol Rastelli, Federico Pellegrino, Giandomenico Salvadori and Francesco De Fabiani were almost 5 minutes behind at the finish. There was no South Tyrolean at the start.
