Olympic favorite with bad luck with injuries

After Stina Nilsson switched to biathletes, her compatriot Linn Svahn took over dominance in the cross-country sprint. At the beginning of the past season, the 21-year-old was the benchmark with four victories in as many races - both in classic and free technique. Everyone expected a safe victory at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf. However, fate threw a spanner in the works: Svahn fell during the home World Cup in Ulricehamn and damaged his shoulder. The injury, which initially seemed harmless, turned out to be extremely treacherous. And so Svahn took part in the World Cup, but ultimately only came eleventh. Afterwards she didn't pause. Instead, she competed in further races - a wrong decision, as it now turns out. Svahn has to go under the knife five months before the Winter Games. “The timing is of course not ideal. But I have reached a point where surgery is the only way to solve the problem,” emphasizes Svahn in a press release from the Swedish Cross-Country Skiing Association. “It’s a difficult and undesirable situation, but I’m doing everything I can to come back even stronger.” On social media, Svahn gave a more private insight. “I didn't think that February 6th (the day of the fall, editor's note) would be a day that I would remember for a long time. We have done everything to treat my broken shoulder, but nothing more is possible,” writes Svahn: “I will come back, but I have to lick my wounds first.” The text is accompanied by a broken heart. This probably best describes Svahn's state of mind.
