Thrilling World Cup sprint: Klæbo dethrones Pellegrino

Klæbo, who won 5 of 7 sprints in the World Cup this year (including the one in Toblach), narrowly retained the upper hand in a thrilling final sprint against the Italian defending champion Federico Pellegrino. The 22-year-old has set another milestone in his career after he is now the absolute top star in the World Cup and won three gold medals at the Olympic Games last year.

But the victory was hard work for Klæbo: the Norwegian struggled in the semi-finals and only narrowly qualified for the final. There he was the big favorite together with defending champion Federico Pellegrino. For a short time it even looked as if the Italian could win gold, after all he led the field for a long time - but in the last few meters Klæbo fired up the turbo and snatched the victory away from Pellegrino.

The only South Tyrolean at the start was Stefan Zelger. The man from Bolzano survived qualifying at his first World Cup, which in itself can be seen as a success. But Zelger was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Falla triumphs among the women A Norwegian also won the women's event: Maiken Caspersen Falla, who had two World Cup victories this year, beat the favored Swede Stina Nilsson and the Norwegian Mari Eide.
