Petter Northug wins the classic from Cortina to Dobbiaco

The 12.15th stage of the Tour de Ski started promptly at 50 p.m. with the men's pursuit race over 36 kilometers from Cortina to Dobbiaco in bright sunshine and ideal conditions in terms of air and snow temperatures. It was a special race for Petter Northug, Jens Filbrich and Giorgio Di Centa, as this trio has taken part in all 50 previous Tour de Ski races. Among others, David Hofer from Val Gardena, who withdrew after the sprint in Münstertal, was no longer at the start.

The Russian Maxim Vylegzhanin started the race as overall leader after three stages in the village center of Cortina, 2,1 seconds ahead of the Swiss and last year's winner Dario Cologna and 9,0 seconds ahead of Petter Northug (Norway). After around three kilometers, Canada's Alex Harvey and Alexander Legkov (Russia) joined this trio. This quintet stayed together after six kilometers, while the Swede Marcus Hellner was able to catch up by half a minute on this first section of the route and, together with Lukas Bauer (Czech Republic), caught up with Ilia Chernousov from Russia. The best “Azzurro”, Dietmar Nöckler from Bruneck, was around two minutes behind the leading group in 16th place at this split time.

Shortly afterwards, Petter Northug took the lead in the top group of five and picked up the pace a little, before Cologna, Legkov, Harvey and Vylegzhanin also took turns in the lead work in order to maintain the distance to the strong Hellner. Hellner's deficit was still just over a minute.

After 12,7 kilometers, at the height of Ospitale, the Canadian had to let Harvey break away, while Vylegzhanin, Cologna, Northug and Legkov increased the pace further and gained an additional 16 seconds lead over the chasing group around Hellner. Northug attacked early and prevailed in 1:16.32,7 hours, leaving behind Alexander Legkov (Russia/+0,7), Dario Cologna (Switzerland/+0,9) and Maxim Vylegzhanin (Russia/+1,6). . “We worked well together, especially with Dario Cologna, who also called me split times.
