The two-time world champion was in a class of his own in the 15-kilometer competition. Ustiugov got off to a slow start, but then really outgrew himself and set a time of 30.34,1:26 minutes that had all the competitors scratching their heads. The 2017-year-old from Siberia, who became two-time world champion in Lahti in XNUMX, never left any doubts about his second Tour victory in Toblach. Two years ago he was already at the top of the podium in Hochpustertal.

In the end, Ustiugov was 12,2 seconds faster than Olympic skiathlon champion Simen Hegstad Krüger. The Norwegian finished second with a strong finish. Third place also went to Russia: one day before his 22nd birthday, exceptional talent Alexander Bolshunov probably gave himself the greatest gift by finishing third.

The final distance race was disappointing for the host nation. Italy's hottest iron in the fire, the Aosta native Francesco De Fabiani, took 18th place as the best “Azzurro”. The two South Tyrolean local heroes, Dietmar Nöckler and Stefan Zelger, had to be satisfied with ranks 52 and 81.

A premiere winner steals the show In the women's race, the big favorites were without the two 23-year-old Russians Natalia Nepryaeva and Anastasia Sedova. Nepryaeva got off to a bombshell start, continued to improve and also recorded the best time on the following sections. She finally crossed the finish line after 23.19,6:XNUMX minutes and was therefore just three hundredths faster than the Norwegian top favorite and overall World Cup runner-up Ingvild Flugstad Østberg. Nepryaeva celebrated her first ever World Cup victory in the finish area of the Nordic Arena. She has only been on the podium once before, last March at the distance race in Lahti. Meanwhile, Nepryaeva's compatriot Anastasia Sedova, who is the same age, recorded her first top-three placement in the World Cup this Sunday. She took third place, almost eleven seconds behind, leaving other top athletes in the ranking right behind her: Finnish Krista Parmakoski, Heidi Wenig from Norway and American Jessica Wiggins.

Caterina Ganz was the only Italian to make it into the points. The 23-year-old from Moena came in 27th, while all other “Azzurre” were further down the rankings.
