Ski jumping: women on the jump to the large hill

Oslo (SID) Women's ski jumping is facing a small revolution. Next winter, Olympic silver medalist Katharina Althaus, world champion Carina Vogt and Co. will increasingly be jumping on the same hills as the men in the World Cup. So far, competitions on large hills have been the exception for women; this season this is only the case at two stations. "As succinct and technocratic as this statement may sound at first, there is a revolutionary approach in this project," said FIS race director Walter Hofer on International Women's Day in Oslo. A corresponding application will be submitted to the FIS Jumping Committee and the FIS Board at the upcoming FIS meetings. Unlike in biathlon, women and men in ski jumping rarely compete for World Cup victories in the same place. That should now change fundamentally. “An application from the Norwegian Ski Association to expand the Raw Air series for women is already being discussed for the next winter season,” Hofer continued. National coach Andreas Bauer had already called for equality with men after the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. "Biathlon showed us how it was, it only became an Olympic event for women in 1992. Today they have competitions together with the men, everything is in one place, the media is there. Women's ski jumping has to develop towards that, then we'll get there at some point equal," Bauer said. At the Olympics, Althaus, Vogt and Co. currently only have one chance of winning a medal, while the men have three. For Beijing 2022 there is an application to at least include the mixed competition.
