This is how much the cross-country skiing stars win in Toblach

Corona or not – this year the Tour de Ski will also be giving out roughly the same amount of prize money as in previous years. Even the cancellation of the Norwegian national team makes no difference.

The Tour de Ski has been underway since January 1st. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the world's best cross-country skiers will compete in Dobbiaco, where a freestyle and a classic race over 10 km (women) and 15 kilometers (men) will be held. For a stage win, prize money of 3.000 Swiss francs (2.777,50 euros) will be awarded. The second and third place winners receive 2.000 and 1.000 Swiss francs respectively. The amounts are always stated gross.

For comparison: In the most public winter sport, Alpine skiing, the winner of a World Cup race - for both men and women - receives an average of around 41.500 euros. Even the 20th place in a World Cup race usually earns the same amount as the third place finisher in a Tour de Ski stage. A victory in the Biathlon World Cup (15.000 euros) is also worth significantly more, even though the sport of ski hunters actually comes from cross-country skiing.

Even though the FIS has been trying to make cross-country skiing more attractive to spectators for years, this sport cannot keep up with alpine skiing and the like when it comes to merchandising. Many attempts have been made, for example with the introduction of the Tour de Ski in the 2006/07 season or the numerous sprint competitions with some spectacular route profiles. But the interest of spectators and the popularity of cross-country skiing is - outside of Scandinavia - relatively low, even compared to before. Tour winner gets less than a Kitzbühel winner The winner of the strenuous Tour de Ski (it extends over 8 stages and leads to the legendary Alpe Cermis in Fiemme Valley at the end) receives almost 63.000 euros. Points bonuses are also distributed. Another comparison is useful here: In the Alpine Ski World Cup, the Kitzbühel winner will receive around 80.000 euros, even if it must be added that the Hahnenkamm races are an exception. In Wengen, Val Gardena, Alta Badia or the women's World Cup at Kronplatz, the average payment is made (the winner receives around 41.500 euros).

For the organizing committee in Dobbiaco, the distribution of prize money is not the main source of expenditure, as OK boss Gerti Taschler said when asked by s+ said: “There are also medals, trophies, bonuses and gifts. Overall, the prize money, the expenses for accommodation and travel expenses for the athletes (the organizer also pays for the latter, Anm.d.Red. ) and taxes to the FISI amounted to around 180.000 euros. That’s about a third of our sales.”

Conclusion: As can be seen in the comparison above, cross-country skiers receive relatively little in terms of prize money. However, the performance of these endurance athletes cannot be overestimated. The FIS will be asked to give this discipline new splendor in order to inspire spectators - similar to biathlon. It's not for nothing that some cross-country skiers have switched to ski hunters in recent years.
