USA wins cross-country skiing gold for the first time

The USA won gold in cross-country skiing for the first time in Olympic history. Kikkan Randall and Jessica Diggins won the team sprint in Pyeongchang ahead of the Swedes Charlotte Kalla and Stina Nilsson, with only bronze going to Marit Björgen and Maiken Caspersen Falla from Norway. Meanwhile, 37-year-old Björgen missed her penultimate chance for the eighth gold medal of her career, with which she would replace biathlete Ole Einar Björndalen (Norway) as the most successful winter athlete in history. The last opportunity is on Sunday in the “Marathon” over 30 kilometers. Björgen was able to console herself with the 14th Olympic medal of her career, making her the sole record holder ahead of Björndalen (13). Randall and Diggins, who had the best sprinting qualities in an exciting three-man final, caused a little surprise. Bill Koch won the only Olympic medal for a US runner in 1976 with silver over 30 kilometers. The team sprint is part of the Olympic program for the fourth time; so far, fifth place was the worst German result. In 2010, Evi Dingebacher-Stehle and Claudia Nystad even won gold, four years ago in Sochi, Steffi Böhler and current biathlete Denise Herrmann narrowly missed out on a medal in fourth place.
