“Total clown”: Norway’s cross-country skiers are foaming with anger

After the victory in Klæbo, there was more than just peace, joy and happiness in the Norwegian cross-country skiing camp. The reason for this was the quarter-finals of the sprint, in which a Chinese man clashed with a ski “moose”. “What more can I say about that? It is a gross violation of the rules,” said the affected Norwegian Pål Golberg. What happened? Golberg had done well in his quarterfinals, but he fell in the finish. The culprit turned out to be the Chinese Wang Qiang, who hit the Norwegian with a reckless maneuver, causing him to fall and come last. At the finish, Qiang initially celebrated his second place, which would have qualified him for a place in the semi-finals, but then the Chinese was disqualified because of his risky behavior. While 28-year-old Wang Qiang was very disappointed, the Norwegian cross-country skiing team was in a bad mood. “I saw what was going to happen, but I didn’t think he would do it. He has competed in a few World Cups before and he knows what that means and what consequences it has. It's strange that he loses his nerve like that," Golberg has little understanding for his competitor's behavior. Consequence of the lack of experience? The reigning relay world champion receives support from his Norwegian teammate Erik Valnes, who came first in that quarter-final heat. “He (Qiang, editor's note) goes into gaps where there is no room - and pays the price. He was a total clown. If you do that, you have no right to be here,” the cross-country skier raged. And Wang Qiang? He was disappointed after the disqualification, as his coach Bernhard Rönning said: “He didn't understand it at first and then he was devastated. That may have been a consequence of his lack of experience.” In fact, the Chinese only has 14 World Cup starts to his name, although his last appearance in the top cross-country skiing class was more than two years ago.
