Karlsson wins – a French woman celebrates on Alpe Cermis

The idea for the cross-border Tour de Ski came about in a sauna. The season highlight for cross-country skiers has been held since 2006. Like every year, the stage race ends with the legendary climb to Alpe Cermis in Cavalese. The athletes struggle up the ski slopes with gradients of up to 28 percent. Since last year, the promotion race has no longer been held as a pursuit but rather as a mass start, which further enhances the stage.

Even before the start it was clear that overall leader Frida Karlsson would take the Tour victory. She started the final 1.15th stage with a comfortable lead of 7 minutes. It still remained unclear whether she would also win the day.

Up to Alpe Cermis, the climbing specialists took the lead from the start. Karlsson set the tone and broke away from the rest of the field halfway up the climb with three-time Tour winner Heidi Wenig and lightweight Delphine Claudel. Karlsson had to pay tribute to her high initial pace with one kilometer to go and collapsed completely in the last few meters. French cheering on the ski slopes At the front of the race, an exciting duel developed between Claudel and Weng for the day's victory, with the Frenchwoman coming out on top. At the age of 24, Claudel won her first World Cup, having already finished third on Alpe Cermis in each of the past two years.

The Americans were also strong, 22-year-old Sophia Laukli reached her first World Cup podium with third place, Jessica Diggins was fifth and Rosie Brennan was sixth. The best Italian woman was Caterina Ganz who crossed the finish line in 3th place, with Anna Comarella in 5th. , Cristina Pittin in 6th and Martina Di Centa in 17th all scored Azzurre World Cup points.

In the overall standings, Karlsson defended a 33-second lead over the Finnish Kerttu Niskanen, who at 34 years old celebrated by far her best tour result and overtook Tiril Udnes Weng, who was second to date (+47 seconds).
