World Cup season debut for Hellweger and Zelger

The Italian national team's squad for this weekend's World Cup in Davos, Switzerland, was announced on Monday. A total of 15 “Azzurri” will travel to Davos, where a freestyle sprint and a freestyle race over 15km will take place.

There are also two South Tyroleans among the 15 starters on the Italian national team. Michael Hellweger from Sarner and Stefan Zelger from Bolzano are celebrating their season debut in the World Cup. The 22-year-old from Hellweger and the 23-year-old from Zelger have already had a taste of World Cup racing in recent years. Both celebrated their debut at the World Cup two years ago in Toblach. Hellweger scored his first points last season in the freestyle sprint in Dresden. Zelger also scored his first points last season at the freestyle sprint race in Seefeld in North Tyrol.

Hellweger and Zelger will both be competing in the sprint on Saturday. The qualifying runs start at 11 a.m., the finals are on the program from 13.30:2 p.m. (live on Raisport and Eurosport 11.30). Zelger will also take part in the distance race on Sunday. The starting signal will be given at 2 a.m. (live on EurosportXNUMX).

Michael Hellweger is primarily a specialist in freestyle sprints.

Break for Nöckler Dietmar Nöckler from Bruneck, however, is taking a break at the weekend. He is not traveling to the World Cup in Davos. The season so far has not been ideal for the 30-year-old. The Tour de Ski is still on the program for Nöckler this year, which starts on December 29th in Toblach.

The “Azzurri” are sending a total of eight men and seven women to Davos. In addition to Hellweger and Zelger, Mirco Bertolina, Francesco De Fabiani, Giacomo Gabrielli, Federico Pellegrino, Stefano Gardener, Giandomenico Salvadori and, for the ladies, Elisa Brocard, Alice Canclini, Ilaria Debertolis, Greta Laurent, Lucia Scardoni and Anna Comarella, will be taking part in Switzerland and Sara Pellegrini.
