World-class cross-country skiing in double form in the Nordic Arena

During the Olympic year, Toblach becomes the mecca of Nordic cross-country skiing for three days. The Tour de Ski, the toughest stage race in the world, kicks off: On January 3rd, the men take part in the 35-kilometer distance race from Cortina to Dobbiaco. Immediately beforehand, the women complete a 15 km race in the Nordic Arena.

“The collaboration between Cortina and Dobbiaco provides the basis for this unique event,” explained Marco Ghedina, the sports advisor for the Belluno winter sports resort, at the press conference in Bolzano. Toblach OK boss Herbert Santer agreed: “The expansion to two communities makes this event so special internationally. We were recently confirmed on the racing calendar until 2017. There is then an option for a further two years. This shows great appreciation and at the same time is a leap of faith on the part of the international ski association.”

Just under a month after the Tour de Ski stage, on February 1st and 2nd, 2014, the World Cup will stop off again in Hochpustertal. On each competition day, around 200 participants from around 20 nations will fight for the best places in a total of four competitions. “Since the Tour de Ski will be held in a shortened form in Dobbiaco this winter, we have also shortened our supporting program somewhat,” explained Santer, but in the same breath promised: “The World Cup event in February will be even more lavish.”

“A very special atmosphere”

On the occasion of the major cross-country skiing events, the designated South Tyrolean state governor Arno Kompatscher will also pay a visit to the Nordic Arena. “In recent years I have enjoyed the very special atmosphere in the Dobbiaco cross-country skiing stadium. That will also be the case this winter,” said Kompatscher.

In addition to Herbert Santer, Marco Ghedina and Arno Kompatscher, the new race director and former biathlete Nathalie Santer, Dobbiaco Mayor Guido Bocher, FISI Vice President Reinhard Schmalzl, State Winter Sports Association President Hermann Ambach and OK Vice President Hanspeter Fuchs also took their place at the lectern in the Hotel Laurin. They all agreed: Dobbiaco will once again experience a true winter sports festival this winter. And that twice.
