Mattia Runggaldier wins the junior world championship title

Mattia Runggaldier delivered an outstanding performance on the cross-country ski trail: from 29th place in jumping, he raced his way up to first place on the podium. The gap of 1,28 minutes to half-time leader Christian Arlt had already been pulverized after just a few kilometers.

In the end, the young athlete from St. Christina crossed the finish line with a lead of 6,5 seconds over the German Manuel Faisst. Another German athlete, Michael Schuller, won the bronze medal.

Mattia Runggaldier was discovered and supported by Romed Moroder as a child. A few years ago, however, his career as a combined athlete was seriously jeopardized when he broke his collarbone in a training fall. The young man from Val Gardena was forced to watch for an entire season before he returned to the international stage last year with third place in the overall standings of the Grandpa Cup.

Runggaldier is only the second Italian combined athlete to win a medal at the Junior World Championships. Before him, only the later Olympic medalist Alessandro Pittin achieved this.

At the first Nordic combined competition, two other South Tyrolean athletes, Samuel Costa and Manuel Maierhofer, took part. They finished 15th and 17th.
