Passionate trainer: A man from Dobbiaco with Austria at the top of the world

Jochen Strobl (41) was a successful Nordic combined athlete. He took part in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and five Nordic World Championships. After his active time and successful sports studies in Innsbruck, the man from Toblachka was initially able to supervise the Italian combined teams as head coach. Strobl really came into his own when he was accepted into the Austrian coaching team in 2015.

He had recently experienced one of the most beautiful moments in his life. Strobl, who was in a relationship with the top Sesto runner Agnes Tschurtschenthaler, became the proud father of Greta on August 5, 2014. For 20 months, little son and bundle of energy Tobias has been keeping the Strobl family happy. It's never boring at home.

It's not easy to reconcile your private life, enjoy your own preferences and be a trainer. “Since I was an active athlete, I’ve been used to doing a lot and being under constant stress. During the Corona period, people are even more attached to the computer. It takes an insightful partner and Agnes understands me very well as an athlete. “That’s my great luck,” explains Strobl. Great coaching team at ÖSV Strobl loves his coaching job. At the ÖSV he is primarily responsible for Nordic combined cross-country skiing. Head coach Christoph Eugen and jumping coach Christoph Bieler constantly exchange ideas with him. “The three of us work very well and closely together, that is our secret to success,” confirms Strobl.

Dobbiaco is particularly fond of the Norwegian model. What do you mean with that? “In Norway, the development of young combined athletes is the top priority. Successes at junior age are secondary for the Norwegians. It's about continuous development and targeted introduction to the elite. “You accept setbacks and let the young athletes gain experience without putting them under pressure,” reports Strobl. Set new stimuli Of course he knows that this is also a question of mentality. “You cannot copy the Norwegian way of thinking and approach one-to-one in Austria and implement it so easily. But you can get ideas for our work. We are also very careful and try to see the athlete as a human being. During the Corona period, there were a few things that had to be done more organizationally. The many tests and safety precautions took time. But we were able to implement our program completely and very well,” says the Puster native happily. World leaders with Norway and Germany Together with Norway and Germany, the Austrians are among the top athletes in Nordic combined. What is important? “Ski jumping is becoming more and more dominant and the Norwegians pay attention to every detail. When it comes to material, we are very well positioned. In order to compete at the highest level, you simply have to pay attention to every little thing,” says Strobl.

His open, calm manner is perfect. From a technical point of view, the Dobbiaco native is very competent. He continues to develop, exchange ideas with colleagues and try to create new stimuli. “That’s crucial, you can never be satisfied. I received valuable inspiration from top Norwegian trainer Trond Nystad, Claudia Künzel’s husband,” explains Strobl. Nystad is considered the Pep Guardiola of cross-country skiing. Away 200 days a year Strobl is away from home 200 days a year. When he is at home he spends a lot of time with his children and Agnes. “Greta already skis and she also enjoys cross-country skiing. Little Tobias will probably be doing sports soon, he just can’t rest,” jokes the young father. But even at home you still have to work. “When you have to create training plans for 8 or 9 athletes, there is a lot of work involved. But I like doing it, I even listen to some combinations every day,” says the trainer with passion. Huge talent Lamparter A huge talent from the ÖSV has already attracted attention with great success in the World Cup this year and achieved podium places. “Yes, we’re talking about Johannes Lamparter, who at 19 is already a world leader,” says Strobl. But he makes it clear right away: “He is completing the sports high school in Stams and should develop in peace and work on stability. His maturation process is not yet complete. He should be consistently at the top of the world in 2, 3 or 4 years.” Sport important for children Strobl found his dream job in the coaching profession. He almost seems called to it. He has been fond of sports since he was a child. “If time allows, I go running or cross-country skiing in the winter. That's always good, it clears your head. I will always introduce my children to sport and encourage them to be active. To what extent should they decide for themselves, I would never put them under pressure,” Strobl has long since internalized – a passionate trainer.
