Olympia 2026: That's why Milan-Cortina won

At the General Assembly of the International Olympic Committee on Monday in Lausanne, Italy's bid won with 47:34 votes against Stockholm on Monday evening ( SportNews berichtete ). There are several reasons for Milan's clear victory.

The IOC has called on cities to reduce costs compared to previous games and, among other things, to ensure sustainability through the maximum use of existing or only temporary sports facilities. Stockholm refused guarantees Apart from the support of the population, Stockholm's main failure was its refusal to give the IOC all the guarantees it demanded for possible losses from the privately financed Winter Games. The fact that Stockholm's mayor Anna König is said to have refused to sign the so-called host contract between the IOC and the host city may have finally brought the Swedish application to an end.

In addition to Milan, the IOC also feels like a winner. “The new candidate process has demonstrated the success of Agenda 2020,” said Bach. Despite the successful Agenda premiere, which had a full impact on this Winter Games bid for the first time, the IOC wants to further develop the reform process to make it easier to attract Olympic hosts. This will be the big topic at the 134th session on Tuesday.
