Olympia 2026: Green light from the state of South Tyrol

The state government is taking the next steps in the application process for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, which is supported by South Tyrol. At its Tuesday meeting, it approved the templates for the organizational, financial and infrastructural guarantees for the joint application. This is regulated in a consent protocol that the state government approved on December 18th.

It is also planned to conclude a ten-year agreement between the Veneto region, the municipality of Cortina and the state of South Tyrol on the “Eugenio Monti” facility in Cortina, which will become a European bobsleigh and luge center and a reference point for national associations after the Olympics who do not have their own facilities for their training sessions.

Better train connection to Bolzano In addition to supporting the organization, the guarantees also concern the financing of the infrastructure in the venues: South Tyrol thus guarantees any adjustments to the Südirol Arena in Antholz within the investment framework defined in the Olympic master plan.

A guarantee declaration concerns the transport infrastructures, where South Tyrol will work together with RFI to realize the so-called “Riggertal loop” between Mühlbach and the connection to the Brenner line. This enables a direct connection from the Pustertal to Bolzano with a time saving of 15 minutes and an increase of 750.000 users.
