The Chinese organizers have drawn a positive conclusion from the Winter Olympics in Beijing. The precautionary measures against the corona pandemic are a “successful model for other international events,” said the chairman of the organizing committee, Cai Qi, before the end of the more than two-week games on Sunday in the Chinese capital. “We did a good job hosting the Winter Games.” The games were “fantastic, extraordinary and really outstanding.”

A "safe environment" was created in the hermetically sealed Olympic bubble, which was completely separated from the Chinese population outside during the Games, said the committee's vice chairman Zhang Jiandong. The virus did not spread either within the closed circuits or outside. “Although the Winter Games took place against the backdrop of Covid-19, they were successful and met our expectations.” Controversies skillfully avoided According to the organizers, 1,7 million corona tests were carried out during the games. 437 infections were detected. 172 cases were discovered in the Olympic bubble and a further 265 in people arriving at the airport. At their carefully orchestrated final press conference, organizers did not address the controversies during the Games over doping, low viewership outside China or the scandal surrounding Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai. When asked by a foreign journalist about the role of women, who also mentioned interest in the tennis star's case, sports representative Yang Yang from the organizing committee simply said: "I don't want to go into details on a case-by-case basis."

The closing ceremony marks the official end of the Olympic Games. It takes place on Sunday at 13 p.m.
