On Wednesday at 13.20:XNUMX p.m. (CET) it was all about everything for Emanuel Rieder from Meransen and Simon Kainzwaldner from Villanders. After a strong first run, they went into the decision in fourth place. But a mistake shortly before the end destroyed any hope of a medal. The two started in Beijing with start number 4 and delivered a solid first run. After the first run, the South Tyroleans were in fourth place, 0,35 seconds behind. Third place, held by the Austrians Lorenz Koller and Thomas Steu, was 0,18 seconds short of third place, a gap that still made one dream. But the Latvian duo Martins Bots and Roberts Plume were also lurking within striking distance, 0,03 seconds behind Rieder and Kainzwaldner. It promised to be an exciting second run. But this turned into a real nightmare for the South Tyroleans. While the start and the upper part went well and the intermediate times still lit up green, shortly before the end the usual curve 13, where several athletes stumbled, also became fatal for Rieder and Kainzwaldner. The pair's toboggan then lurched the last few meters to the finish and any chances of a medal faded. In the end they even fell back to 6th place and had to end the day with their heads hanging. Historic gold for Germany The fight for the gold medal was a German duel. After the first run, Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt led by just 0,05 seconds over their compatriots Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken. The old masters Wendl and Arlt didn't let this lead be taken away from them and won the gold medal. The victory means this German doubles athlete's third gold medal in a row at the Olympic Games after 2014 in Sochi and 2018 in Pyeongchang. Eggert and Benecken were able to defend second place and took the silver medal after bronze in Korea in 2018.
